Vortex flowmeters use the phenomenon of vortex formation behind an obstacle in the flow of the medium. The partition generates vortices that alternately break off from its edges. The frequency of vortex shedding is directly proportional to the average flow velocity, and therefore to the volume flow rate. During vortex shedding, alternating momentary low pressure fields are created on both sides of the partition. The sensor located behind the partition detects them, counts them and converts them into a linear digital signal proportional to the speed of the flowing medium. The measurement using a vortex flowmeter is not affected by changes in pressure, density, temperature or viscosity. Therefore, vortex flowmeters are universal devices for measuring the flow of gases, steam and liquids.
